Somewhere In Nebraska, Saturday Morning

Drive across the country, they said. It'll be fun, they said. It was lies. Derek had driven across the country with Laura and had it been at any time but too soon after the fire, they would have murdered each other.

Why he thought it would have been a good idea to accompany Stiles back to Beacon Hills after his first year of college was over... it was possibly a good bit of delusion that this would end somewhere other than being terrible.

Case in point, the god awful jeep of Stiles was overheated and needed to sit to cool. In the middle of Nebraska. God, Derek hated the midwest.

"We could go look at the largest tractor in three counties," Derek said, looking at one of the faded pamphlets of local activities he'd found.

If it was good enough for the Winchester brothers, it would probably be good enough for them.

Then again, Stiles had stayed at the murder motel so it's not like he was too choosy after that.

"Want to wait to see what the next town over has?"

This was a trick, you little shit. Derek knew that.

"This is fine." It was in no way fine.

"Fine." Your gross motel funeral, Derek. Stiles pulled into the place and parked outside the front office. "Go ahead."

They were bordering the bible belt, Stiles didn't think two guys walking in there and requesting a one bed room would go over well.

Even if they weren't, they'd get judged because Stiles looked like a teenage hooker. So. There was that.

"Get the bags," Derek grumbled, hauling himself out of the jeep to rent them up a room. The grossest room they could get.

This was going to end in fleeing in the middle of the night.

Stiles pulled out their bags and stood outside the jeep. He looked up at the place and wondered if it was possible that he'd hit up two haunted motels in his lifetime.

This one was only haunted by poor life choices.

Derek hightailed it out of the 'reception' building with an honest to god key in hand. This was weird to him. "I don't think they liked me."

Could have been the disdain Derek was exuding. Coulda been.

"Somebody not like you? Impossible," Stiles said. Still being bitchy, yep.

Derek tossed the keys to him. Because he was a jerk who knew all about Stiles' reflexes.

Yup those keys fell right to the ground. Stiles glared, dropping Derek's bag on the ground in order to pick up the keys. The bag stayed there while Stiles went to their godforsaken room.

Rude, Stiles. Derek's clothing did nothing to you.

Derek rolled his eyes, grabbing his bag to follow. "I hate the midwest."

Stiles unlocked the door and flicked on the light switch. "...gross."

Maybe they should have just slept in the jeep.

Derek wrinkled his nose once that door was open. "You don't even want to know what it smells like."

The jeep sounded promising right now.

And now Stiles felt bad. But not bad enough to apologize for being an asshole. "Don't have to stay here."

Derek did say yes to this place.

He huffed, shouldering his bag. "I think if we found a camping store and slept in a tent in the parking lot, it would be better than this room."

Also, so romantic.

"Are you being serious or are you being dramatic?" Stiles asked.

[justlurkinghere]

"Totally serious." But he did press his shoulder against Stiles'. Like that was some sort of apology.

Stiles sighed, relaxing a little when Derek bumped up against him. "I'm sure we can put the tent someplace better than the parking lot."

"That sounds like an innuendo." FYI.

He smiled briefly. "We're being nice now?"

[justlurkinghere]

"We have a common enemy." The Room. It was out to get them.

Stiles rolled his eyes. "Come on, if we're doing this tent thing we need to get stuff before stores close. And we're getting a sleeping bag too."

Because it might have been hot as hell outside now but he knew it'd probably get cold in the night and he didn't have the luxury of being able to turn into a wolf.

There would still be so much cuddling.

"We can get two," Derek suggested, bumping him before turning back for the jeep. "They zip together."

"There's got to be a Wal-Mart around here somewhere." Even deadbeat towns had Wal-Marts.

Excuse you, they only had Walmarts. Maybe a Farm and Fleet too.

"We can get food there too." This was sounding like a proper camping trip, guys.

It kind of ended up being a camping trip. Luckily Nebraska had no end to places where people could turn off the highway and put up a tent for the night. Stiles left the tent building to Derek. He never liked following directions which would only end in disaster in this situation.

"I haven't been camping since Cub Scouts. Unless those bouncy castles with Jackson count."
