Somewhere In Nebraska, Saturday Morning

Drive across the country, they said. It'll be fun, they said. It was lies. Derek had driven across the country with Laura and had it been at any time but too soon after the fire, they would have murdered each other.

Why he thought it would have been a good idea to accompany Stiles back to Beacon Hills after his first year of college was over... it was possibly a good bit of delusion that this would end somewhere other than being terrible.

Case in point, the god awful jeep of Stiles was overheated and needed to sit to cool. In the middle of Nebraska. God, Derek hated the midwest.

"We could go look at the largest tractor in three counties," Derek said, looking at one of the faded pamphlets of local activities he'd found.

It kind of ended up being a camping trip. Luckily Nebraska had no end to places where people could turn off the highway and put up a tent for the night. Stiles left the tent building to Derek. He never liked following directions which would only end in disaster in this situation.

"I haven't been camping since Cub Scouts. Unless those bouncy castles with Jackson count."

"They don't count," Derek assured him, looking very intent on getting those poles threaded correctly. "We used to camp when I was a kid. But it was usually full moons."

"Were tents involved or did you just sleep outside in nature?" he asked.

[justlurkinghere]

"...sometimes we had tents." Usually not. "It was fun."

[robinonadderall]

"Are you saying this is going to be fun?" he asked.

[justlurkinghere]

"I think it will." He hoped so. He really hoped so. "On the plus side, animals won't be coming near the area."

Even if they left food out!

"That's a relief." No, seriously. "Almost done?"

Derek gave the tent a look before stepping back to look at it. "Yeah. It's good." He glanced back at Stiles and gave him a quick smile.

It was kind of cute to see how much Derek was into this camping thing. He had enough time to cool down to be able to admit that to himself.

"Should I take off my shoes before I get in?" He didn't know tent etiquette.

"Yeah, less mess," he replied, grabbing the sleeping bags to put them inside. "Next time we do this, we should get stuff to make a fire."

Also, not somewhere they could be arrested if the smoke was seen.

"There's going to be a next time?" he asked, kicking off his shoes.

"Might be easier on the drive," Derek replied, toeing his own off to head on in and set up the sleeping bags for them. "We'll hit the Rockies tomorrow after all."

Enjoy that majestic view.

Stiles suddenly realized he opened the doors to the whole camping thing and he had the feeling it was going to be hard to close them again. He should have known Derek would love the sleeping outdoors thing.

"But what if we see a big fancy hotel?" he joked, crawling in after him.

Derek hummed, flopping back on the sleeping bags to make them smell like him. There was a little wiggle for that. "What did you tell me about not spending a lot of money on you?"

"Didn't you just grump about us getting a room in a hotel and for me not to complain about it?" Remember, when they were both being bitchy?

"But then you bought me a tent," Derek replied. Ignoring the fact that he paid for it.

[robinonadderall]

"You bought the tent," Stiles said, not ignoring that fact. He awkwardly laid down on the sleeping bag Derek had bought.

He vastly preferred beds but he wasn't going to mention that to Derek.

Derek rolled his eyes, tugging Stiles over so he was on top and using Derek like a bed.

"Pick a hotel then." But remember that Derek would gleefully have a Folgers commercial style wake up at dawn to watch nature.

If Derek woke Stiles up at dawn, Stiles would kill him.

Stiles rested his head against Derek's shoulder, closing his eyes for a moment. He wasn't about to sleep in his jeans but he didn't mind lying like this for a bit. "I don't think there's a hotel that you're going to approve of for the next hundred or so miles."

Rightfully so.

Derek snorted in agreement, running his hands through Stiles' hair. Yeah, sleep wasn't about to happen in his jeans either. "I'm sure we'll find one."

Maybe near Vale or Aspen.

"It's really quiet." He wasn't used to all the nature sounds.

[justlurkinghere]

"No it's not. Listen."

Yep, there were bugs. And frogs. And in the distance there might have been a coyote.

"You're so into this, aren't you?" he asked after a few moments of listening to nature.

[justlurkinghere]

"Yeah," Derek replied sheepishly. "You hate it."

"I don't hate it." He wasn't that big of a fan, sure, but seeing Derek be into it was worth the whole thing.
