Denny's On the Mainland, Saturday Night

Laura was once again gone. And Derek was totally fine about that. Yeah, totally fine. He was just glaring down at his coffee cup like it offended him on every level possible and would set it on fire with the power of his hatred.

And he was apparently talking to Stiles again.

Well, it had really been more of a kidnapping because the kid had his jeep available to drive them to Denny's while the Camaro was still in Beacon Hills. But, you know, whatever got him a Grand Slam of sadness.

Stiles really wished he could sometimes. It probably would have been easy to shut his mouth and just finish his pancake bites but if he didn't bring this up now he probably would never do it. "I gotta tell you something else and you're not going to like it."

"I don't like most of the things you tell me." Seriously.

"Dude, seriously, can the sass for a second." If it was possible for a Hale to stop with the sass. "My conversation with Kate wasn't all her petting my head and me calling her a psycho for burning your house down."

Sass was their lifeblood.

Derek went very still in that deer in the headlights, Scott just said he wasn't part of his pack after making him bite a cancer ridden old man sort of way.

It was a very unsettling look. One that actually made Stiles kind of nervous. He was very much not looking Derek in the eye when he spoke.

"Yeah she, um, told me about the the two of you being um...involved. Which I'm guessing you didn't want me or likely anyone else to know and I'm really, really sorry she shared," Stiles said. "If she was trying to reiterate the fact that she was a psycho to me then well done, Kate, 'cause that worked."

Stiles pushed his plate of pancake bites towards Derek, like that would make things better.

Derek stared at him and then the pancake bites. The nice, nonthreatening pancake bites that would not blame him for the deaths of her family.

Did you do this in a public place so he couldn't make a scene, Stiles? Did you?

Well he couldn't bring it up at the house and put Puppy Joe through more trauma. He had their feelings baby to think about.

"I wasn't going to say anything. Shocker, I know," Stiles said, rubbing the back of his neck. "But I didn't want her to tell you that I knew."

He got the feeling Kate would get a kick out of that.

Puppy Joe was a Hale, okay? He had a life of sass and trauma ahead of him.

"You know." About his terrible guilt issues.

"Yes." Didn't they just establish that?

Derek, narrative. This was Derek here.

"Why are you still here?"

Aaaaand boom goes the emotionally stunted dynamite.

"Why wouldn't I still be here?" he asked. "Or are you kicking me out of Denny's right now?"

Your emotional issues and lack of conversational skills were confusing him, Derek.

Yes, yes they were. And he wasn't even having those alpha mood swings! Which is totally what they were. Like a flowering girl. See how easily the menstration analogy worked on werewolves? See?

Derek gave him a look like he was possibly touched in the head. "You know I got them all killed, Stiles," he ground out like this was more painful than digging a bullet out of himself with a pair of pliers. "Why the hell are you still here?"

Derek shared feelings about as much as Stiles shared feelings which is to say never, so needless to say that outburst was a little shocking. Why couldn't they have a nice trip to Denny's for once?

"That wasn't your fault," Stiles said after a momentary loss for words. "You didn't know any better."

Derek just gave him a look of disbelief, curling both hands around his coffee cup for lack of something to do with them. His eyes went back down to the table as well, not caring to look at Stiles anymore. Ugh, you are such a sack of emo, Derek.

Go buy a loft to express you manpain in with exposed brick walls and a giant random hole.

Excuse you, that loft was to express Derek's romantic side. It was a love nest!

"The great thing about this werewolf stuff is that you can tell that I really believe it's not your fault. Which it's not. Kate's a sick bitch who took advantage of you," Stiles said, having no trouble handling the conversation himself. "And I'm not leaving you either. You're pretty much stuck with me forever."

That loft would be the Wolf Cave! Sheriff Stilinski would get a spotlight with a wolf on it to summon Derek to... make bad choices and punch things. Add in a few whores and its straight out of Frank Miller.

Also, that was a terrifying thought, Stiles. Terrifying. And stop making him have feelings. Sure, they were mostly annoyance and exasperation, but there they were. All feeling-like.

"You're a kid, Stiles. There's no such thing as forever." Hey, a topic he was comfortable with! Yelling at his past self through confused teens.

"It's called hyperbole, Derek," Stiles said, withholding the urge to roll his eyes this time. "Obviously I wouldn't hesitate to bring out the wolfsbane if you did something to really hurt me. The point is I think you won't."

Stop ~*~believing~*~ in him, Stiles. It filled him hope for his terrible future. And forced him to give you that 'Scott finally agreed to be in my pack' look. You know the one.

Believing was Stiles' thing, okay? It was part of the whole spark deal!

"So are you gonna eat the pancake bites I so generously offered you or what?"

Derek pushed them back at him with a quiet little huff. You're never getting rid of him now, Stiles. Never. "Order the blueberry ones when the waitress comes back."

So that he may provide you with food. BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN HIIIIIIIM.

Oh god what has he done? At least it's not a dead deer at his door again.

"Well if you insist." Like Stiles was going to turn down more pancake bites. "Don't tell Mike, but I like these better than the pancakes he made. It might be the fact I can eat these with my hands making the difference though."

"What happens at Denny's stays at Denny's."

That was totally the new rule.

"Wise words." And almost kind of a joke. Which was...weird and unsettling. "Scott still thinks Denny's is code for something. I almost want to ask what he means but then I figure it's just best to leave it."
