justlurkinghere: (creeper in the woods)

He'd expected Stiles and his friend Scott to come back at some point or another. Whether it was for the inhaler or because the boy had been bitten by whoever it was that killed Laura, he'd expected them to come. So it wasn't exactly hard to pick up their clumsy footsteps coming through the woods.

"I don't know what was. It was like, like I had all the time in the world to catch the ball. And it's not the only weird thing. I can hear stuff I shouldn't be able to hear. Smell things." Scott. He only vaguely remembered the boy's voice, but it wasn't Stiles so there weren't many other options.

"Smell things. Like what?" And there was Stiles.

Derek moved along, following them as they walked toward the spot where he'd found Laura. He was careful not to make too much noise, but he doubted that the kid would pick up on his presence.

"Like the mint-mojito gum in your pocket," Scott said.

"I don't have any mint-mojito---" There was the sound of fabric rustling and the scent of the mentioned gum as Stiles checked his pockets. Not bad for someone new to this. "So all of this started with the bite."

"What if it's an infection," Scott said, starting to sound seriously worried about what they were discussing. "Like my body's flooding with adrenaline before I go into shock and die."

"You know, actually. I think I've heard of this," Stiles replied. "It's a specific kind of infection."

There was an expectant pause before Scott asked, "Are you serious?"

"Yeah. Yeah. I think it's called 'Lycanthropy'." How had he made the connection so quickly? Stiles was smart, but this was ridiculous.

"What's that? Is that bad?"

"Oh yeah, it's the worst," Stiles said seriously. "But only once a month."

"Once a month?" Okay, was Scott too dumb to function or something? That was the only possible answer.

"On the night of the full moon." There was a pause before Stiles gave a mocking little howl. He was just an obnoxious little shit then. Of course. Derek heard Scott huff in annoyance before Stiles continued, "Hey, you're the one who heard a wolf howling."

"There could be something seriously wrong with me!"

Stiles snickered and Derek rolled his eyes in annoyance at the pair of them. Of course he'd been saddled with this. "I know! You're a werewolf! Rrrawr! Alright, I'm kidding. But, if you see me in shop class trying to melt all the silver I can find it's because Friday's a full moon."

Shit. He'd gotten too used to the moon phases in Fandom.

They stopped just where he'd found Laura. "I could have sworn this was it. I saw the body, the deer came running. I dropped my inhaler," Scott said.

With that, Derek stepped out from where he was hiding, getting a good look at the pair. Scott was crouched down, digging through the leaves.

"Maybe the killer moved the body," Stiles suggested, hands in his pockets as he looked away from his friend. He started once he saw Derek standing only a few yards from them.

"If he did, I hope he left my inhaler," Scott muttered, still looking and oblivious. "Those things are like eighty bucks." He only glanced up once Stiles had hit him on the shoulder a few times.

"What are you doing here?" Derek demanded, looking from one to the other before finally settling on Scott. He was less likely to snap and throw Stiles into a tree if he pretended he just wasn't there. After neither of them answered, he snapped again, "Huh? This is private property."

"Sorry man, we didn't know," Stiles said, trying to avoid Derek's glare once it was turned on him.

"We were just looking for something, but... forget it," Scott said, drawing attention back to him and his sulky little frown. "Alright, I've got to get to work."

Right, Derek reached into his pocket, tossing the inhaler at Scott before he turned away to head back to the ruin of the Hale house.

He almost stopped when he heard Stiles hiss, "Dude. That was Derek Hale. Remember. He's only, like, a few years older than us---"

But Derek was well aware of where that line of conversation was going. Of course Stiles would have remembered about that. Derek hunched his shoulders, moving faster to put distance between himself and the pair of teens. He didn't need to hear about the fire again.
