His first meeting with Cora having not ended in bloodshed or being shoved romantically at any obvious villains, Derek was going to hesitantly consider this a win. Even though it was more than a little awkward to put the teenage girl Cora was now together with the child he'd known her as.
He was, shamefully, happy when she'd all but jumped at the opportunity to get some space by picking up their meal for the evening.
Right about then he missed Laura more than ever. She'd know how to slot them both back into a family again. Both Cora and Derek were too brittle and angry inside to be welcoming so quickly. Even with each other.
Derek sighed, making a phone call once he couldn't hear the rental car anymore.
