Creepy Old Mansion on Phoenix Way, Saturday Morning
At this rate, Derek was beginning to give serious thought to not sticking around on island for the weekends. First he woke up as a woman, and now there was a wolf in his sleeping bag with him. Along with the goddamn puppy.
How was this his life?
"It's too early for you to have a fit," a voice that reminded him very strongly of his sister informed him. The wolf was awake and staring up at him, it would seem
The talking wolf.
Right.
Derek did the wise thing and mostly just glared back in confusion. Then, he grabbed his phone to give Jack a call about this terrible, terrible situation. Of terribleness.

He listened to the message, eyebrows up. "Of course Derek would get a talking wolf," he muttered before being interrupted by a scraggly yellow-and-black canine he could swear he'd never seen before.
"An African wild dog is much more sophisticated," the creature agreed, bowing her head in a kind of amused subservience. "Maradachya, at your service."
And then there was really nothing to do but take Maradachya off to meet Derek.
"Don't blame me for not warning you," he said when he got to the house, without preamble. "This has never happened before."

"You have a dog," Derek said needlessly.
The wolf next to him trotted forward to sniff at Maradachya.

Maradachaya, meanwhile, was occupied sniffing at the wolf. He seemed to pass the test; she sneezed in satisfaction before retreating to stand beside Jack.
"We have a whole bloody pack here," Jack observed. "Down to the pup."
no subject
"We're not a pack," she replied for Derek, moving back to press against his legs. "Two don't make a pack."
no subject
"That's not how it works," Mara told him.

She shook her head. "We aren't doing a test. He's right."
"Then I will," Jack said, and bolted into the woods. He got perhaps twenty yards before the pain made him turn around, and he was ashen when he got back to the group. Mara, for her part, was lying down whimpering.

Because everyone was socially awkward here!

"Probably not for the last time," Mara muttered.

Mara looked equally interested in the answer.

"Someone threatened to lei him," Talaiel added.

"Not on the island," Mara added, rolling her eyes a little. "Say that before you worry them."
no subject
Any moment now.
"Something to do with Eric?"

Derek's response was grunt of agreement.

"Punishment for what?" Mara asked. "None of us choose what we become."
"Stop being cryptic," Jack sighed.
no subject
Derek sighed in annoyance. "They're not very helpful."
no subject
"We can be," Mara said. "If you ask the right questions."

"I mean," Jack said, in a more measured tone, "I don't find her that annoying."
no subject
Seriously, Derek. Get some goddamn therapy.
"They know too much about us," he said, watching the wolf with a wariness that was echoed in it.
no subject
Jack eyed Mara. "Yeah, that's not my favorite thing either."
"It's not my fault you hide so much of who you are," Mara said serenely.
no subject
"Everyone has their reasons for doing that," the wolf said, slinking around to Derek's other side.
no subject
"They don't seem inclined to spill our secrets, at least," he said. "That's something."
no subject
"I'd hope not."
no subject
"It's a weekend," he said. "It's Fandom being -- Fandom. May as well be kind to them while they're here and expect them to vanish by Monday."
"You sound like you'll be so sad to see us go," Mara observed.

Jack shrugged helplessly. "I'll check," he said. "If it is next weekend -- maybe I should go off-island, I don't know."
no subject
SUUUUUURE.
no subject
"You didn't even sound like you believed that," Mara said. "But you're probably safer here then anyplace you don't know."
