As was probably shocking to absolutely no one, Derek did not socialize much at age ten. Which is why having a sleep-over was just crazy talk if you asked him.

Crazy talk.

But that wasn't going to stop him from trying out this whole thing. With friends.

Thanks to the babel gremlin, Jan even understood that.

"Why not?" he asked, frowning. "I'm not little."

He was five, and could pass for a slight four. The fact he didn't know what a movie was made little difference.

"You're too little for it." Derek was too little for it too, so...

"Am not." Witness the expert persuasive skills of the future lawyer. "Anyhow, I just wanted to know if you know where my house is. I'm all lost."

"Oh. But it's a sleep over." A sleep over, Jack!

"Like a children's home?" Jack scrunched his nose.

"Is that like foster care?"

[bitten_notshy]

"It's where you go if your parents can't take care of you," Jan said, shrugging. "Unless they get a job for you."

He was a cheerful child, yes.

"...you can stay here," Derek said after a moment of staring. "We have food."

And they were just sharing with everybody? There was probably a catch, but Jan decided not to care. "Thanks," he said, stepping into the house. "I'm Jan. What kind of food?"

"Derek. There's pizza and chips," he replied. "It's pretty good."

"I'm hungry," Jan said. "I kind of got lost after I left the park. I was walking forever."

Or for half an hour, give or take.

Derek just rolled his eyes, taking Jan's hand to lead him to the 'living room' where there was food. "Well, you can have as much as you want."

"Thank you," Jan said, perfectly content.

"You can use my sleeping bag if you want too. I don't get cold easily."

[bitten_notshy]

Jan shook his head. "It's warm enough here." Because he was from before central heating. "Can I just have a blanket though?"

"It's like a blanket for sleeping on the ground, though."
