IHoP on the Mainland, Monday Evening

Tomorrow was Stiles' eighteenth birthday, which meant Derek was taking him out to dinner tonight. So that he could spend tomorrow with his dad and Scott.

Aren't you glad Derek was in contact with the Sheriff, Stiles? Aren't you?

Derek put the sensible, highy safety rated car into park and stared at the windshield. "Do you want your gift now or inside?"

He smiled. "You're so into me, it's disgusting."

And adorable.

Derek maturely flicked a bit of egg white at him.

"You've caught onto my evil plan."

Oh, Derek. That implied the narrative allowed you any success.

"You don't do a very good job of hiding it," he said with a smile. "And yet we've managed to hide this from most people in town."

"Or they're being polite and pretending not to know."

"Probably the latter," Derek admitted. "Jack didn't seem surprised."

"And I'm like a thousand percent sure Mike knows." It was a miracle he hadn't walked in on them yet.

"He has to." A beat. "Barton doesn't. I haven't been shot."

"He's not going to shoot you, Derek." Probably.

"He's going to shoot me."

"He won't," he said. "When the time comes I'll tell him myself and express how I very much prefer you unshot."

Derek sighed, giving him a look for that. Because he vaguely remembered Clint's reaction to them that one future weekend. "Okay."

"You don't believe me at all, do you?"

"I don't believe he'll listen," Derek corrected.

"Why would he shoot you?" he asked. "It's not like you're forcing me to do anything. I asked you out."

"I'm older than you," Derek muttered, going back for the soothing bacon. "It doesn't look good to people."

"Okay literally everyone I've ever talked to about this encouraged it," Stiles said. "So it looks good to most people. At least to the people that matter."

"Scott doesn't count." Scott had bad ideas about romance.

"What about Lydia and Allison?"

"...you talked to them about us?"

"Um duh. What else am I supposed to talk to them about?" He couldn't join in on the conversation about fashion or knives!

"Things?" Okay, he didn't have a good answer for it. "They were okay with us?"

"Of course, why wouldn't they be?" Sure, Allison thought their own Derek was sort of a butthead, but she could separate the two in her mind. "They want me to be happy."

Derek gave him a look that was overly pleased by the fact that Stiles was saying he made him happy.

Because he was easy to please like that.

Which of course meant that Stiles gave him a pleased look in return. "Yeah, yeah you make me happy. Like you didn't already know that."

"It's different when you say it."
