Mansion of Trauma and Poor Decisions, Saturday Afternoon

With all the parents on island and having been given advanced warning about the arrival of the Sheriff, Derek was doing the smart thing for someone who had been arrested by the man previously and decided to hide at home.

He was a terrible person like that.

But he could catch up on Mountain Men.

Sheriff Stilinski
Yeah, there would be no hiding from Sheriff Stilinski. Not after all the stuff he had been hearing between Stiles and Scott. The mansion was easy enough to find in a small town like this, even if it didn't look as creepy as Stiles had implied.

He was at least polite enough to knock first.

Derek Hale
Well, Derek could just pretend he wasn't home. Yeah. People would believe that one. He was a social butterfly like that...

It might have worked had the dog not wandered off to stand in front of the door to stare out at the Sheriff. This person didn't seem like they were about to wander in and shoot things. So, you've earned his love by existing and not being overtly murderous, Sheriff Stilinski.

Sheriff Stilinski
Well that automatically earned a smile. The Sheriff took that as his cue to open the door. He was coming in one way or another, let's be real. "You must be Puppy Joe."

Derek Hale
This was clearly illegal! And Derek was eyeing the windows in the kitchen to figure out how quickly he could get out of the house before realizing there was no escape.

"Sheriff." Letting yourself into his house meant Derek got to show up out of nowhere, silent like a weird ninja.

Sheriff Stilinski
The Sheriff wasn't nearly as jumpy as Stiles, but there was definitely a surprised lift of his eyebrows when he turned to face Derek. "Hale. Cute dog you have here."

Derek Hale
Derek looked at the dog like it had betrayed him by indeed being adorable. Because Puppy Joe would betray him at the drop of a slice of pepperoni.

He was a fickle dog like that

Sheriff Stilinski
He knelt down to scratch Puppy Joe's belly. "Suddenly I understand why Stiles gushes over you so much."

"The dog." Just in case Derek got any ideas.

Derek Hale
"Of course." Why didn't he jump out the window when he had the chaaaaaaance?

Sheriff Stilinski
Sheriff Stilinski stood up straight, the pleased look on his face fading away when he looked Derek. It was mostly for show. "I assume you can guess why I stopped by."

Derek Hale
"Yes." Because c'mon now. Who didn't know where this one was going?

Sheriff Stilinski
"Good," he said. "Let's go into the kitchen, and you can make me some coffee."

Derek Hale
Couldn't they just get the 'stay away from my kid or else I shoot you in the junk until it stops healing' part over so that Derek could manfully hide in his bed with a carton of ice cream and glare at things?

Derek sidled on around him to keep from putting the man at his back before just making a break for the kitchen to busy himself with the coffee making. His life was just the absolute worst ever right now.

Sheriff Stilinski
"You don't need to act like you're heading to your funeral, son," the Sheriff said as he followed Derek into the kitchen. "I promised Stiles I wouldn't kill you."

Derek Hale
Oh, well that made him feel so much better about this exchange!

Derek sighed, grabbing the coffee cups despite having no plans to drink anything himself. "Right."

Hey, look! Verbalization! Watch out, he might form full sentences soon!

Sheriff Stilinski
"He seems to have grown very attached to you." No, that was not a fond tone of voice.

Derek Hale
Derek carefully set down the cups on the island, looking anywhere but at the Sheriff as he went for the milk and sugar next. "He's seventeen."

Sheriff Stilinski
"And?" he asked, lifting an eyebrow. "There a reason you're keeping such close track of his age?"

Now he was just screwing with Derek.

Derek Hale
Which was just rude when dealing with all those issues. Rude.

Derek tensed up, glaring at the coffee pot. "No. He's seventeen and stupid enough to think he wants to hang out here. He'll go to college next year and find more friends his own age."

Sheriff Stilinski
Well, dammit, that kind of response made things less fun for the Sheriff. Stop punishing yourself, Derek, and let him do it for you. "I think you're underestimating Stiles' loyalty. Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping he finds more friends that don't put him in life threatening situations, but I doubt he'll ditch the ones he has now."

Derek Hale
Oh, you. Derek's entire life was filled with self loathing and rage. It was what he did.

"Keeping him away from Beacon Hills would help there."

Sheriff Stilinski
"Has he kept out of trouble here?" he asked.

Derek Hale
"Yes." Well. He hasn't gotten himself killed and connected to messed up druid rituals.

Sheriff Stilinski
"I saw the pictures of you two cuddling." That did not count as keeping out of trouble according to Sheriff Stilinski.

Derek Hale
"...what."

DAMN IT, STILES.

Sheriff Stilinski
There was a sigh and the Sheriff pulled his phone out of his pocket. After some scrolling he finally found the pictures of Stiles versus the hugwolf and turned his phone towards Derek.

What? They were kind of adorable, of course he'd keep them.

Derek Hale
DAMN IT, STILES.

Derek stared at it for a moment before thankfully being saved by the coffee being done brewing. "There were gremlins involved."

Wow, that sounded like drug abuse there.

Sheriff Stilinski
"Gremlins," he repeated with a nod. "You look pretty comfortable like that."

Oh there was suspicion there.

Derek Hale
"Gremlins." Yes. Yesssss.

Sheriff Stilinski
"Right." Sheriff Stilinski cleared his throat and focused on the countertop in front of him. "Look, it's not any of my business who Stiles sees after he turns eighteen. I trust his judgement when it comes to people."

Derek Hale
Derek made a noise that was possibly pained before he grabbed the coffee to pour. "You arrested me," Derek pointed out. Just in case the Sheriff had suffered some memory loss with that whole Darach thing.

Sheriff Stilinski
"You looked pretty suspicious at the time, kid," the Sheriff said. "We let you go after we got all the details, didn't we?"

Derek Hale
Don't make this weird, Sheriff. Don't make this weird.

Derek just stared at him, shoving that coffee forward. It was possible that he looked pretty much like a serial killer again.

Sheriff Stilinski
"Look, Derek, I'm just trying to get a gauge of what's going on here," Sheriff Stilinski said, curling his hands around the coffee cup. "It's obvious to me that Stiles cares about you. When Stiles cares about somebody he tends to go a little...overboard when it comes to expressing his feelings."

He thought about the rabbit food Stiles had shoved at him earlier in the day and shook his head. Overboard and naggy, that was Stiles.

"I just want to know if the feeling is mutual, and that Stiles isn't being used or is going to have his heart broken. I don't want another Lydia Martin incident."

Derek Hale
And you just made things weird. Stilinskis can't be trusted with anything.

Derek grabbed his own cup of coffee to clutch like it was a shield. "I wouldn't--he's seventeen."

Sheriff Stilinski
Sheriff Stilinski rolled his eyes. "I don't think you're dating my son, Derek."

Derek Hale
Well thank god for that!

"We're just friends." With awkward tension. "He comes here for free food and Netflix."

Sheriff Stilinski
The Sheriff rubbed at his forehead. He really hoped he hadn't been this clueless at Derek's age. "Just...tell me you're not going to hurt him in any way."

Derek Hale
Hey. Hey. It wasn't cluelessness so much as willful repression of key facts.

"I wouldn't hurt him."

Sheriff Stilinski
"Good," he said with a nod. "Well this has almost been sufficiently awkward, don't you think?"

Derek Hale
"Understatement," Derek muttered. Because he couldn't help himself.

Sheriff Stilinski
"Good talk then," the Sheriff said, finishing his coffee and moving to leave. "It was nice seeing you again, Derek."

He took a few steps towards the door before turning on his heel to face Derek again. "For the record, next time you want to try to hide the obvious crush you have on my son, you might want to come up with a new line. Bringing up his age over and over just makes it seem like you have a countdown until he turns eighteen on your calendar."

There. Now the awkward quota had been filled.

Derek Hale
DAMN IT, SHERIFF STILINSKI.

Derek had just been taking a sip of his coffee when that happened. Which meant he was now choking on scalding hot coffee. Because Stiles' father was evil beyond all comprehension.
